Start with the windows
Identify every window that is high, wide, sun-exposed, difficult to reach, or likely to receive a powered shade. Plan an intentional, documented low-voltage power path that matches realistic mounting options.
Open walls are an opportunity
You do not need every smart product today. Preserve useful power, pathways, and network connections so the next step is easier later.
Identify every window that is high, wide, sun-exposed, difficult to reach, or likely to receive a powered shade. Plan an intentional, documented low-voltage power path that matches realistic mounting options.
Look for reliable power, ventilation, service access, future equipment space, and practical cable routes. A cramped exterior box or sealed attic is rarely a good long-term equipment location.
Prioritize offices, televisions, gaming areas, work-or-school bedrooms, equipment locations, garages, and outdoor entertainment areas. Extra cable at important destinations can add redundancy and flexibility.
Large, long, masonry-heavy, and multi-story homes may need more than one access point. Select central coverage locations before drywall instead of hiding equipment at the edge of the home.
Review the front entry, driveway, side gates, backyard, patio, and detached buildings. Confirm mounting height, viewing angle, lighting, and cable route.
Coordinate video-doorbell placement with trim and masonry. At televisions, consider power, Ethernet, conduit, soundbar wiring, and equipment location. Preserve useful routes for future roofline lighting.
Conduit can preserve options where the destination is known but the future cable is not. Diameter, bends, pull access, and documented endpoints determine whether it will actually be useful.
Capture wide room views and close-ups before insulation and drywall. Label both ends of every cable, record destinations, and retain marked-up plans so future work does not depend on guessing.
